Pull the trigger first

The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution says U.S. citizens have the right to bear arms. I agree with this. I believe any stable-minded individual with the right training on how to use a gun should be able to own a firearm, if that’s their choice.

What I don’t agree with is the type of weapon one should own. A homeowner protecting his or her family should have a handgun or 12-gauge shotgun. Hunters should have a hunting rifle to hunt and kill game. What’s the purpose of owning an AR-15 or AK-47 just to hunt or protect a home? These guns are made for war.

A hunter can’t hunt with these types of weapons; they would destroy the animal. The bullets would tear through the flesh so fast that the hunt would be useless.

I have been affected by gun violence. On April 27, 2001, my boyfriend Leroy Hooper III was shot and killed. This incident made me sad, but also made me want a gun for protection.

Even though a gun takes a life, it can save a life if one pulls the trigger before the bad guy.
